Local author Bob Shano will discuss his book, Never Too Old For War.
Not long after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Shano, a veteran of the Vietnam era, reenlisted as an Infantryman in the U.S. Army and volunteered for combat duty in Iraq. He was 53 years old at the time of his first deployment. He went on to complete two more combat deployments—one in Afghanistan and, at age 59, a second tour in Iraq—before being mandatorily retired in 2013 at the age of 62. He is the oldest person ever to serve in the Regular Army as an Infantryman in a war zone. Much of what Shano experienced during those 11 years of wartime service is revealed in his compelling tell-all memoir, Never Too Old For War.
