Learn about the weird history of McNeil Island in Washington state, home of the last prison island in the U.S., told in comic book form!
McNeil Island in Washington state was the home of the last prison island in the U.S., accessible only by air or sea. It was also home to about 50 families, including Colleen Frakes’ when she was growing up. Colleen’s parents—like nearly everyone else on the island—both worked in the prison. In the graphic memoir "Prison Island," Colleen tells her story of growing up on the McNeil Island. In her talk she will expand upon the book and talk about some of the weirder elements of McNeil Island's history—including haunted trees, escape attempts, con artists and a sea monster!
Colleen Frakes is a graduate of the The Evergreen State College and the Center for Cartoon Studies. She was awarded a 2007 Xeric Grant for her first graphic novel "Tragic Relief," and won the 2009 Ignatz Award for Promising New Talent for her second book, "Woman King." Her series "Iron Scars" was nominated for the 2016 DiNKY Award for Best Mini Comic. She has created comics for Zest Books, Mirage Studios (Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Dark Horse and many others! For more info, visit: http://www.tragicrelief.com
