Learn to play the classic tabletop role playing game. Please read the full event description for details.

Dungeons and Dragons is a cooperative storytelling game. Learn more about it: https://dnd.wizards.com/dungeons-and-dragons/what-is-dd

Library staff will take the role of "Dungeon Master" and describe the fantasy setting where the story takes place. Players will each control a character in the story.

Players will need the following:

1. Access to Zoom, a functioning microphone, and speakers or headphones

2. Ability to listen to the Dungeon Master as they tell the story, listen to other player characters, and wait for their turn to participate

3. Ability to describe what they want their player to do and listen to instructions

We can also use chat and live transcription in Zoom for communication. Please contact us before the program to arrange any other accommodations.

Library staff will supply character sheets to players via email before the program. We encourage players to print out the character sheet and read it before the game starts. We also encourage players to look at the rules, but don't worry if it doesn't make sense at first. The Library Dungeon Masters will guide you through!

If the player has a twenty-sided die (d20), please bring it to the game! The twenty-sided die will be used often to decide success or failure in the story. If the player does not have a twenty-sided die they may use a virtual die roller or ask library staff to roll for them.

Content warning: The Library Dungeon Masters have created a story setting inspired by fairy tales and fantasy literature. It is a setting where magic is present and players may encounter monsters. There may be some fantasy violence and description of frightening scenarios. The Library Dungeon Masters are working to create story content that is appropriate for the 8-12 year old age group and will adjust rules and content as necessary. We will be limiting play to the Dungeons and Dragons Basic Rules which are available for free online: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules . The story setting is similar to The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and players will be allowed to play the role of a human, halfling, dwarf, or elf. Caregivers are encouraged to review the basic rules and send any questions to VirtualPCLS@pcls.us

Note for caregivers - Registering your child for this event gives them permission to participate in the library's virtual event hosted on Zoom, an online platform. The event will be monitored by library staff. We encourage caregivers to join in with your child and ask that an adult stay with children under 5.
